Transportation is essential for a nation’s development and growth. The transportation system that exists at any point of time is the product of two factors: the state of the economy which produces the demand of traffic and the quality of system that is existing or need of facility and infrastructure to cater to the traffic demand. The traffic volume, speed-flow-density of traffic flow, delay & congestion, capacities of highways, level of service, intersection, inventories, parking, safety, traffic control devices, roadway lighting, traffic access and impact studies are of utmost important for efficient operation of highways.

Traffic engineering, therefore, deals with the efficient movement of goods and passengers. While a big part of traffic engineering focuses on designing and constructing new infrastructures & facilities, Lifecycle Traffic Engineering Services such as improving existing roadways, Implementing traffic safety measures, Installing traffic signage and markings, traffic signals or roundabouts, variable message signs are becoming very important to enhance the efficiency of the existing infrastructure. Traffic studies also cover all of the other functional aspects of road geometry for traffic flow and intersection management and correcting deficiencies in existing roads.

Traffic engineering is becoming more important than ever due to international corridor and multimodal corridor improvement of freight traffic and concept of universal accessibility. Traffic demand assessment and Cost benefit analysis are essentially required at different stages of the project including conceptualisation, feasibility and during detail engineering.

With a lineage stretching back about two decades, BPC INDIA team has had many a comprehensive transport studies, urban transport planning with a complete understanding and meticulous analysis of the transportation system in regional level or in a specific area, supported by an expansive collection of data. The project we undertake under public offices, local resident or commercial establishment when

  • New development is proposed that may generate new traffic
  • For a roadway construction project or widening for capacity augmentation
  • To examine areas of frequent accidents
  • To examine locations with complicated roadway geometrics
  • Optimizing road space
  • Developing road safety strategies and programs
  • Assessing and implementing measures to reduce road accident
  • Performing impact studies on accessibility, parking, and traffic generation
  • Congestion study & Urban transport planning
  • Integrating different forms of active transportation and transit into road designs
  • Developing intersection design and operation plans
  • Performing road safety studies
  • Trade and logistic improvement — actual and potential (latent) demand for freight movement, infrastructure bottlenecks .
  • Evaluate the logistics efficiency related parameters such as tariffs, throughput times/dwell times, capacity utilization,
  • Master planning for urban traffic management and traffic control for urban streets.

The Highway projects need to develop a rational methodology to forecast passenger and freight traffic movements on the proposed roads. These should be based on the populations served and anticipated trip production and freight generation rates. Forecasts of traffic levels on the sections of road to be upgraded are expected to be based on future growth estimates and considering traffic diversion between routes depends on factors such as economic projections, growth factors, development and land use forecasts, and population, per capita income trends are taken into consideration.

BPC has a spectrum of projects in Rural Highways, Freight corridor, Economic Corridors, Special Accelerated Road Development for North Eastern Region, Inter-Corridors & feeder roads, National Corridor Efficiency improvement, Border & International connectivity roads, Coastal & port connectivity corridor and improvement of urban traffic and congestion.
